I remember getting to know the book The Authentic Man's Way through Gustavo Giti's recommendation, in one of his texts published on the Papo de Homem website, around 2011. At the time, I was 18 years old and starting adulthood, facing the dilemmas characteristic of this phase, especially regarding relationships with women. At that time, the so-called "attraction gurus" were on the rise and books for men teaching strategies for "conquering" women.
However, I was always wary of these people's ideas, as I believed they turned individuals into mere objects and encouraged a high degree of selfishness. As human beings, we are part of an interdependent society, and such thoughts can seriously compromise the mental health of many and perpetuate backward ideas such as masculinity.
It was in this context that this book illuminated my path. Written by David Deida, an American author renowned for his works on sexuality and spirituality, the book caught my attention from the first time I picked it up, especially because of its opening sentence: "May this book serve the liberation of your true aptitudes, so that multiple communities of human beings may benefit even more from your living and loving".
Throughout the pages, I found numerous insights. In a nutshell, the book covers several lessons on how a man can learn to control himself and love more skillfully, not just women, but all the people we come into contact with on this journey of life. One of the central ideas is that each individual possesses both masculine and feminine inner qualities, regardless of their gender, and these qualities can vary between dominant and balanced.
The book is especially aimed at those with a more masculine essence, and their partners with a more feminine sexual essence, because, according to the author, we are attracted to sexual reciprocity. In addition, David Deida teaches that "whatever your gender or sexual orientation, if you want to experience deep sexual and spiritual fulfillment, you need to know your natural sexual essence - be it masculine, feminine or balanced - and live according to it".
Another idea in the book is that the masculine essence is guided by mission, while the feminine essence is guided by love. At first glance, it may seem strange, but the author emphasizes that this doesn't prevent someone with a masculine essence from loving their partner or children, just as someone with a feminine essence from having a successful career. However, if the core of these people is not filled with mission or love, they can feel empty and unable to achieve their purpose.
So, over the next few posts, I'll be sharing insights from each chapter and delving into the ideas of this book that are so special to me. Join me to discover more about this transformative work to the integrity, authenticity and masculinity journey.
